I just wanted to ask everyone who dj's, where did you get you're dj name ? A name can either make or break a dj along with defining his style and presence. Here is some backround on mine......

Back in 1998 in San Bernardino CA, I was a last minuite dj at this party called "Jungle Book". I was filling in for a artist who was a no show and the promoters were getting frustrated on the empty time slot they now had. Luckily for them, I had a crate of vinyl sitting in my car in the parking lot and I told them that I would fill in the hour spot free of charge (Just to get some stage time in). Now I had only been spinning for about 6 months at this time, but I was confident enough that I could pull it of. After about my 3rd record into it, I noticed that I had the whole crowds attention. Everyone in the jungle and hardcore room flooded to the main arena to try and figure out who was the one on stage making party jump off like it was. I must have had at least 40 kids come up to me and ask "Who are you......this is the tightest set I have ever heard !" After I had finished and my legs stopped shaking from adrenalin, the promoters approached me and said "You came out of nowhere unexpected kind of like a storm and we want you to perform for us again."

And then the name just hit me and it all made sense. I was a quiet kid who came out of nowhere unexpected and I hit hard and fast while effecting everyone in my presence. A storm is unpredictable and you never know when it's comming.....and when it does, everyone is going to feel it.

Thats is how my name was born and has been with me ever since. ;)

Well, "Some Assembly Required" was my actual bandname (back when I had my band). My lead guitarist's mom came up with it back in '97. Over the years, when the band became a solo musician "project," the name still seemed to fit, 'cause all kinds of random people would collaborate with me.

And when the DJ thing started, I saw no reason to use any other name than what I've already been using fer years.

I was told my name (Thomas Miller) had a "trance DJ" sound to it.

So Ive always just used my name.

I thought long and hard to find a name that best described me and the reasons I Dj! I believe that one of the truest most fundamental elements on the dancefloor is love. Hence "Eros"- the God of Erotic Love. Was always into mythology and the name seemed appropriate for me and what I stand for. The love of the music, the love for that feeling you get when you're having a plurry time. The love of the energy that the music and people create together by dancing in Unity.

my friends decided way back in high school that everyone needed to know someon named boomer and we at that time didn't....so they named me that.

then i figured that just adding dj to a name was overused, and dj boomer was prolly already taken. so I copied off of the Disco Stu from teh simpsons and became disco boomer.

plus ive been known to play a few funky tracks.

For some reason back in the middle school days some of my friends had a hard time understanding my name (Jarod) and would frequently call me nick names such as Jayrod and J-Bone. For some reason I liked the Jayrod nick better than the J-Bone nick when it came to choosing a DJ name. I also used to practice writing Jayrod all graffitied out when I was board in school. I wanted something that was very similiar to my true name and something that people already called me.

At the risk of sounding a bit pretentious and probably a smidge crazy...;) here's my story.

Even though I never got the chance to dj, I came up with the name I produce under, Formfield, trying to describe somewhat of an abstract thought I was trying to define.

I was trying to come up with a word that described my idea about the space that we exist within, or life exists within. I had this idea of an infinite number of different forms that make up life as we know it and beyond, and all the energy that exists, basically materializing to experience a physical form. That's the form part.

"Field" is basically the space, or field, we have given life and ourselves to manifest within.

Of course anyone familiar with java would probably think it was a lame javacode reference (which I had no idea of when I came up with the word, then looked it up and found out what it meant in code). It is a tag that deals with putting a text field within a form. I wasn't about to give it up though, so...there ya have it.

I USED TO BE AN AEROSOUL ARTIST (TAGGER TO SOME OF YOU) BACK IN MY HIGHSKOOL DAYS, AND I ACTUALLY WROTE UNDER THE NAME "MARK ONE".

EVENTUALLY, THE LAW CAUGHT UP TO ME AND I HAD TO STOP. THEN I TURNED TO DJING AND KEPT THE NAME CAUSE THATS WHAT I WAS KNOWN BY TO ALL MY FRIENDS.

No, it was just some abstract idea that I had one day that I was attempting to define.

Besides, things are complex. I enjoy going through mazes in my mind. ;)

I've had a few psuedo-names before this one stuck... As a dj, I go by DJ DEFIANT...

I've always been the type of person to do things "different from the norm"... To thepoint of being defiant by nature... Always thinking outside the box... Trying new ideas no matter what the cost... Following the dream...

When it clicked, though was one day... I came in to work and my boss wanted me to do a task and showed me how to do it... Well, I found a different way of doing it and he insisted I do it his way... When he returned to the office... He saw me doing it my way and said, "Damn, you are one defiant person..."

I just agreeed....

i go by tiesto, i got it from being the world's #1 dj. i used to go by dj tiesto, but when you're #1 you don't need to clarify you're a dj, people should know that already.

before that i went by paul oakenfold, but then i realised that name alone made my programming bad and mixing ability even worse... thus i'm left with tiesto.

I realized this a couple years ago...

I've had the name for awhile and it's pointless to argue who had it first... The only true way to be 100% completely original is by using your real name...

But wait... That's not possible, either... There's a DJ Dallas in LA, too...

It's just a damn name...

tenno - production name, took japanese class and needed a name that summed up god/devil/universe/blah blah blah, discovered it looked cool in numeric [10]o, and the japanese symbol is the same symbol on the jacket of Amano Jaku from urutsukidoji ^_^

other prduction names:

dj bedtime, equine corridor, waves of dead black, mary tyler moriphine (with Gwen, not that i did much on that one) and on and on.....

miz astrid

Astrid is my middle name. Had been using that for awhile and found out there's another Astrid across the pond...and not that it matters so much, but I started tacking on the miz and I kinda like it. :)
