THE MIDWEST ACID PYRAMID
3 DJ'S 4 TURNTABLES 3+ HOURS!!
DJ ESP aka WOODY MCBRIDE
http://www.intergruv.net/caveman/images/photos/wmcbride.jpg
Mixer, producer, and event-promoter DJ ESP (aka Woody McBride) did much to bring the sound of acid-house and rave to the upper Midwest in the late '80s and early '90s. Born in North Dakota, he moved to Minneapolis in 1988, discovered a burgeoning house scene, and began spinning at clubs and raves around the area. McBride quickly acquired a trademark for his Wall of Bass speaker set-up at DJ gigs, and began recording as well with a trio of hard, dark acid EPs from 1993-94 (Interference, Amplification '94, Bad Acid-No Such Thing) that inaugurated Milwaukee's Drop Bass Network. He also co-produced tracks with Freddie Fresh (another transplanted Minnesotan) and recorded for Detroiter Alan Oldham's Generator Records, establishing himself along with fellow hard DJ/producers like Adam X, DJ Hyperactive, Damon Wild, and Delta 9. McBride also founded his own label, Communique Records, that released his own tracks plus those by frequent Drop Bass culprits. (An array of Communique sublabels -- Head in the Clouds, Country Western, All Ears, MakeOut Music, Sunsuist, Party Rock, Tape -- kept him busy as well.)
TERRY MULLEN
http://www.mannonnetwork.com/frecuenciaelectronica/pic_1340.jpg
Terry Mullen became one of the most popular American DJs of the 1990s, spinning everywhere from Midwest rave parties to his residency at San Francisco's Spundae club night. He rose to prominence through the underground, mostly through his DJ sets and a multitude of mix tapes rather than more commercial tactics like label affiliations and commercially released mix CDs.
Born in suburban Chicago, Mullen grew up listening to '70s rock music before discovering hip-hop in the early '80s. He began spinning hip-hop around 1983 or so, and then once Chicago's house movement gained steam in the mid- to late-'80s, he converted from hip-hop to house. In the '90s, he began integrating techno into his sets and relocated to the West Coast. He began experimenting with production in the late '90s, releasing a few of his tracks. For the most part, however, he continued concentrating on his DJ career.
DJ HYPERACTIVE
http://www.djbookingsonline.com/html/imgs/djs/hyper.jpg
Hyperactive has over 50 releases to date on labels such as Contact, Hybrid, Planet of the Drums, and Communique, including the anthem "Venus" on Missile. Look for him to add more under his belt with upcoming releases on his own label, 4 Track Recordings, as well as a long anticipated full-length release on High Octane Recordings. One of the hardest working DJ's in the business, Hyperactive is known globally for his cut and slash style of mixing both House and Techno. He's played all over Asia, Europe, South America and North America, and headlined events such as Love Parade in Berlin and the Liquid Room in Tokyo. This man is a Midwest legend and a single listen will tell you why

AQUASKY vs MASTERBLASTER

Aquasky are from Bournemouth, UK. They started their career in 1995 when they were signed to Moving Shadow Records for a 3 record deal on the back of their massively sucessful 'Dezires/Images' single which was remixed by DJ Krust . But before then they individually had sucess under their individual projects. Dave Wallace was known for his early jungle tunes as Rave Doctor/Fugative on Underdog Recordings . Keiron Bailey for his Artinis/New Vision work also on drum and bass label Underdog and Brent Newitt for his hip hop releases as Jaziac Sunflowers on Bob Jones' Black on Black label .
In 1996 Aquasky signed to Polydor/Polygram where they recorded the Orange Dust LP . This contained the singles 'Raw Skillz (Featuring Big Kwam and the first ever Scratch Perverts adventure onto vinyl) and the drum and bass track Opaque which made an appearance in the UK national charts. Also on the LP was the hip hop track 'Rough' featuring Big Shug from the Gangstarr Foundation. Whilst signed to Polydor the trio also released on Reinforced Records (Concrete Boom EP) and R&S (Dave Wallace under his own name with the 'Future Realties' single and Keiron and Brent worked as Skin Divers where 2 singles were released) and Dave put out the Soul Motive EP on Nuphonic Records .
In 1999 Aquasky returned to their drum and bass birthplace Moving Shadow where they recorded 2 LP's 'Bodyshock' and 'Aftershock'. Bodyshock contained drum and bass tracks such as 'Sonix' and 'Battlestar' and a funky breakbeat number titled 'Blue Thunder' that was made world famous when it was featured on the first Tony Hawk game. The Aftershock album was the first time that Aquasky ventured into breakbeat back in 2000. This was a remix LP containing mixes by London Electricity, Adam Freeland (his first ever venture onto vinyl) and Aquasky themselves.
A series of 12"s also came out on Moving Shadow during the years 1999-2002. These included tracks such as 'The Stalker', 'Bulletproof' (which was remixed by Higher Sense out of the RAM crew), 'Spectre', 'Subdivison' and 'Nightvision'.
Whilst these singles were being released, Aquasky started a new project and new name. Tenth and Parker was in essense a live jazz/house/latin band and an LP was released called 'Twenty:Twelve' on the renowned Mr. Bongo label. This vocal project contained many famous names including Mark Murphy (US Jazz singer who has recorded on Muse, Atlantic, Prestige and Riverside to name a few) Snowboy ( Percussionist who spearheaded the whole Acid Jazz movement and is world famous for his group The Latin Section and for his work with Lisa Stansfield ) and the band also contained the bassist from Fairground Attraction and Blur's horn section. 3 singles came from this outing including 'Kool Down' which was featured on a Norman Jay compilation for Nuphonic . This later was remixed by King Britt .
In 2001 Aquasky started their alias Aquasky Vs. Masterblaster . This was after a meeting with Vini Medley of Botchit and Scarper Records and their first breakbeat 12" surfaced on his label titled 'Sureshot' later that year. This was followed up by the mighty force of the '777' EP which turned out to be the biggest selling single for the label. In 2002 they were asked to record an LP, their 5th. Titled 'Beat the System' this was a benchmark album which announced that Aquasky had arrived and that they were here to shake things up. Bringing the dance ethos of drum and bass into breakbeat, Aquasky created a new genre of the scene. A sound and vibe that was made to make a dancefloor shake. With influences taken from their drum and bass/hardcore background this was an orginal concept that many copied and many were inspired by.
In 2002 Moving Shadow decided to remix some of their extensive 12 year back catalogue and Aquasky Vs. Masterblaster were asked to pick 2 tracks that they were influenced by . 'Lord of the Null Lines' by Hyper on Experience and 'Renegade Snares' by Omni Trio were chosen and remixed to now legendary proportions. These sold so well that the label decided to start a sister label titled Shadow Cryptic to support the breakbeat scene. The obvious step was to ask Aquasky to record another album. So in 2003 their 6th LP 'Stayfresh' was made. This time the emphasis was to make a new, fresher album with broader influences. Stayfresh has already been checked as the most important breakbeat LP so far. New ideas were presented and the guys turned the scene on its head making them now one of the hottest producers in the world of Breakbeat.
There are also a host of remixes that Aquasky have played apart in including Master Ace, The Freestylers, DJ Deekline, 4 Hero, Sneaker Pimps, Art of Noise and A Guy Called Gerald.
Aquasky are also all accomplished DJ's and have travelled the world many times exciting clubs and festivals with their broad approach to music and a good ear for a bit of bass and even residencies as far as San Francisco. This has assisted them in establishing their own labels Passenger, Sonix and Incident which they use as a base for their productions and a home for many other artists from Finland to America to New Zealand.

CAT SCRATCH FEVER TOUR 2005

REID SPEED
http://sdravers.net/images/reviews/full158.jpg
Reid Speed has had a pretty great year. In the fourteen months since her first mix CD, Resonance, on Breakbeat Science Recordings, she conquered a 35-date tour, moved to Los Angeles, secured a national ad campaign with Triple 5 Soul, and was selected as the official DJ for a network comedy show. As the perfect finish to her outstanding debut year, Reid Speed now releases her powerful new drum + bass mix CD, Life After Dark, a reflection of her packed dancefloor sets that illuminates the depth of her selection and the full spectrum of her talent as a DJ.
Little more than a year ago, Reid Speed was living in a loft apartment in Brooklyn with a view of the elevated subway tracks, touring on the strength of a nationwide network of regular parties and promoters won over by her energetic and fully-engaged style of DJing. After the release of Resonance and her monstrous U.S. tour (immediately followed by a month on the tour bus with stateside breakbeat kings Ming + FS), Reid moved to Los Angeles in an effort to nourish her fanatical following on the West Coast. From her new base camp, she has succeeded in making waves not only as a drum + bass artist, but in the house and breaks world as well, drawing on a dedication to an eclectic dancefloor that has shaped her tastes as a DJ. Reid's regular trips back to New York have demonstrated a continuing loyalty to her roots, and the response from New York City's notoriously fickle crowds has been nothing less than adoring. Amidst all this, the minds behind urban ber-brand Triple 5 Soul took notice and have signed Reid to a national full-page ad campaign, placing her alongside such underground royalty as Dwele, Jean Grey, and Peanut Butter Wolf. Television called soon after, with Jamie Kennedy hand-selecting Reid as the on-air DJ for The Jamie Kennedy Experiment on the WB network. The first JKX special featuring Reid should air in late September, closely following the release of Life After Dark; the Triple 5 Soul campaign is already in full swing.
None of this attention has in any way distracted Reid from her first love - the dancefloor, to which she dedicates Life After Dark. The tracks on this, her second mix CD, represent a bold cross-section of the varying moods of drum + bass. Reid weaves a musical tapestry of uncommon threads, building a bridge from the musical bounce of "Funhouse", by NYC d+b production kings Mathematics, to the hardcore ragga stabs of DJ Dara and A-Sides' "Unholy Grail". Always one of drum + bass' most talented storytellers, Reid not only manages to get these two sounds into the same room but has them engaged in deep conversation - her greatest strength as a DJ and one of the standout elements of this mix. In a nod to diversity of tempos, the mix is bookended by slower and deeper works; Life After Dark opens with the murderous downtempo of drum + bass legend Dylan's "Black Rainbow" and slows to a sublime close with Omni Trio's remix of the Foul Play classic "Music Is The Key" - a bold gesture for a drum + bass DJ, and an illustrative start to the next unpredictable year of Reid Speed's artistic life.
