Alright...I am not really a movie person and I dont really understand those movies that are complicated , "think deep and get the underlying message" types of movies. Call me a moron, but anyway.
I have to watch Fight Club for extra credit and I didnt really like it the first time, so I shut it off about 1/4 of the way through but I have to write a paper on it and I need to know what key points I should pay attention to when watching it, or else I'll never get it. What does it have to do with
anarchy?
Help a sista out.

watch for when Tyler Durden is actually introduced. there's a couple of spots (single frames) where he pops in and pops out. I had to watch Fight Club 4 times before I understood.
A test for you...figure out why Fight Club didn't win any awards.

Just watch the movie...fight club owns.
yeah...1/4 through it you dont even get the wacky twist.
but if you want some help.
Fight club is an anti-mass consumer book. It wasn't written to be propaganda, but it does have some very large underlying themes (whether intentional or not) about a utopian society, anarchy, and finding ones self.
The main and un named character, the narrarator, lives a meager existance where his accomplishments in life are measured only by material possesions.
Tyler Durden, whom the narrarator meets later, indroduced the narrarator to a school of thought that gives him freedom. Tylers Anti-system appeal to the narrarator because he has felt the pain of the system beating down on his personal freedoms since he was a child.
When "Fight Club" begins outside the bar, the narrarator steps into a whole new world. What breaks civilization and society, reservedness and obediance, and general expectations of the world more than just beating the hell out of each other? He feels free because he doesnt have to care about being going with the stream any longer, he simply blocks the stream and runs amuck.
This theme appeals to generally everyone in society, specifically men, who feel a lack of importance and place in the world. Fight club grows in size and turns into almost a "secret organization". The members feel a sense of unity against society, and eventually (under the leadership of tyler) become guerrilla terrorists.
"Project Mayhem" is the next evolutionary step of fight club. Project Mayhem attacks symbols of society that many people hold everyday security. Corporate art, Buildings, Credit card companies, etc. are all targets.
At the end of the film, all of the major credit card company headquaters are blown to rubble with nitro glycerin placed at the base support beams. When this occurs, tylers dream becomes a reality. The credit reports of every american will be erased...bringing everyone to 0...everyone to the same level
when everyone is equal, it is Anarchy.
...wow that was fun to write...hope it helps.

when everyone is equal, it is Anarchy.
and this, ladies and gentlemen, is why Fight Club didn't win any awards. The entire movie is against the people with the most money and those people are the ones that control everything we see and hear...outer limits, anyone? :D

The book isnt neccisairly BETTER than the movie, now that i really think about it...because the movie was fucking incredible...chuck palahniuk himself said he couldnt of done a better job doing the movie and that the actors were perfect for his characters.
but when it comes to the book, it has much more...insight...you feel more into the narrators perspective...palahniuk has such an incredible writing style, which is FULLY demonstrated in the movie with the narrators narration. The book is one big narrative, and that crisp intense and edgey insight the narrator provides in the movie is in no way way lacking in the book.
To summarize it up... after i watched the movie i thought "that was a great story"
after i read the book i thought "i am the narrator"
you really do get into it.

WORD!!!
Thanks for all the replies. I just now am checking this thread and I DID watch the movie last night. It was pretty bad ass. I loved it! When I focused on the movie and not about whether or not I liked it, I really got into it. My sister was watching it with me and she didnt quite understand it, but I would explain something and then the narrator would say the same thing.
Thanks again for the replies, I'm gonna quote some of you in my paper =)
