If given the choice between being well respected and well liked which would you choose and why?

Just curious. A situation came up today that put my beliefs to the test. I’m wondering what other people think.

Well respected. In my opinion...Most times when people are well liked its usually because they have to bend over backwards for other people. At least that is what I've seen. *Not sure if that made sense*

Respected.
A good amjority of the time, people will "like" you for shallow reasons. Think about the most popular kids in school. They are usually popular because of thier looks or some simillar stupid reason. Then suddenly you have tons of friends because they think it makes them cool to be kickin it with the popullar people. But when someone likes you for these reasons, there's no garuntee that it will last. Over night you become no body and no one gives a fuck about ya anymore.
But when you are respected, it doesnt matter how many friends you have or what you look like or any of that shallow bullshit. You have a good quality about you that people admir. Sure you could do something dumb to cause people to lose that respect for you, but then it would be your own fault and not because everyone else just decided it wasnt cool to like you anymore. See?
And if you really think about it, if people respect you, then chances are they really like ya. Where as, you can be hella liked for stupid reasons, and not really be respected in anyway.

Respected.... I was never really liked in high school, and i didn't care. Even though i was made fun of constantly, in most people's eyes I was still respected for being me. Being respected is very important, at least to me

Everyone voted "Well-Respected" but come on, be honest. Some people do things because they want to be liked, or they're attention whores, or they just like being in the spotlight. I can name a few people on this board who I dont even know on a personal level but they emit that very feeling. I conciously have to tell myself sometimes that it doesnt matter what other people think; subconciously I say to myself "Well, if I say that, they'll get mad and not like me." I have to remind myself that as long as I speak the truth and don't purposefully intend to hurt people, who cares what they think? The truth hurts half the time and if it does then you need to change it. Maybe I'm just rambling, but that's what I think. =) Carry on.

One more thing of being "well respected" is even though you are honest, you are also aware of appropriate times to be blunt. Honesty is a weird thing...There can be a discreet truth - Then you can tell the complete truth. People mistake honesty for always telling the complete truth. When you know that it will hurt someone when you dont feel it necessary you should figure on not saying EVERYTHING but instead a generalized portion. I was just thinking about that and I thought I'd share.
